Software development for Chicago companies

Your integration project has stalled because nobody on the team has time to make five systems agree on one order. Our senior engineers join the roadmap, build the platform and the event log behind it, and stay to run it in production. Chicago puts that problem in the trading firms by the Board of Trade and the manufacturers of the south suburbs, and an insurer in Schaumburg or a hospital group meets it too.

Founded

2017, and still independent

Bench

115+ engineers, 80 Databricks-certified

Experience

Fifteen years average, per engineer

Serving

Chicago, Naperville, Evanston, Schaumburg

Derivatives and futures trading on LaSalle Street and Wacker Drive, heavy manufacturing across the south suburbs and northwest Indiana, and the rail and intermodal yards around Joliet that connect both to everywhere else. If your company sits where regulated finance meets physical logistics, and in Chicago many do, every automated action has a clock and a counterparty.

DatabricksTemporalAzure

TechFabric is a Databricks partner with an award-winning Databricks engineering team, 80 of them Databricks-certified, and a Temporal partner. Where a system reaches past the workspace we build on Azure, AWS and Google Cloud.

What software development covers

Web applications

Applications built to be changed safely years after the original team has moved on. That means tests that mean something, seams where the business logic can move, and a deployment nobody is afraid of.

Mobile applications

iOS and Android, built as products rather than as ports. The maintenance story is decided at the start, while it is still cheap.

APIs and integration

The seams between systems, done once and properly. Most of the expensive failures we are called into are integration failures wearing another name.

Data platforms

The layer underneath the application, on Databricks, Azure, AWS or Google Cloud. If the reporting and the application disagree, the platform is the reason.

Modernisation of what exists

Often the work arrives as something already built that has become hard to change. We would rather read it and tell you honestly whether it is worth keeping than sell a rewrite you may not need.

Durable, auditable workflows

Processes that take days, call several systems and must never half-complete. Getting that right is a different discipline from getting a request handler right, and it is where we spend most of our time.

You've got a launch date and an MVP that falls over once real users and orders hit it.

Dynamics 365 consultants in Chicago

Manufacturers and distributors across Chicagoland, from the industrial park in Elk Grove Village by O'Hare to the steel and chemical plants of northwest Indiana, run Dynamics 365 Business Central for production, inventory and multi-site finance. We implement it with Dynamics 365 CRM, connect it to freight, EDI and warehouse systems, and give operations Power BI reporting that ties to the general ledger.

Every trade has to reconcile

In Chicago, CME Group runs its futures exchanges from Wacker Drive, Cboe sits a few blocks away on Van Buren, and the trading firms around the old Board of Trade building on LaSalle reconcile every day. CFTC Rule 1.31 keeps their records for five years, and SEC Rule 17a-4 holds broker-dealers to the same discipline, so a position that can't be rebuilt from its history is a finding.

A table of current positions with an audit table beside it is the common design, and month-end goes on explaining why the two disagree. We make the event log the record instead. Every position and report derives from it, and a wrong projection is rebuilt by replay rather than patched by hand. On a desk that reconciles daily, that's an hour against a week.

Design starts from the events themselves. We name every one a trade or an order can emit, agree which system may write each, and replay a week of production history against the new model before anything is cut over. Freight and manufacturing firms get the same treatment, with a shipment or a work order where the trade was.

Clients we have done this for

If your orders, customers and invoices live in separate systems that have to agree, this is the study to read. AmTab's orders reach Business Central from the store without anyone re-keying them, and Power Automate keeps the store, the CRM and the ERP holding the same records.

B2B ecommerce

AmTabAmTab

AmTab, a table manufacturer, had orders moving between departments on paper while demand climbed. Senior engineers from TechFabric worked through those manual steps with AmTab's own people first, then connected the amtab.com store, the CRM and Business Central, so an order placed online reaches the ERP that invoices it without anyone retyping it.

How an engagement runs

  1. 01

    A technical conversation

Not a sales call. An engineer, asking what you are trying to do, what has been tried and what it will actually take. Where the work needs them, product and design people join the same conversation.

  2. 02

    Two weeks, fixed fee

A short assessment ending in a written plan with a scope, a sequence and a number. You own the document whether or not you carry on with us.

  3. 03

Build with your team in the repo

Senior throughout, and no pyramid with one architect over a floor of juniors. The person in your standup is the person writing the code.

  4. 04

    Run it

We stay on the pager. Nobody designs a fragile thing they will personally be woken by, which is most of why this arrangement produces different software.

Two weeks, fixed fee, and a written plan whether or not you build it with us.

Tell an engineer what you want to build

A senior engineer reads it and replies within one business day, usually with the questions that decide the first two weeks.

A sentence or two is plenty, such as what it should do and what stands in the way today.

Goes straight to a senior engineer. By sending this you agree we can contact you about your enquiry, and occasionally about our work. Tell us to stop at any time and we will.

Around Chicago

Chicago's developer calendar

ChiPy, the Chicago Python User Group, has met since 2003, usually on the second Thursday and in a different host company's office each time. Digital Delivery Chicago, the old Chicago JavaScript group, meets monthly on Tuesdays at the Aon Center. The bigger dates are further out, with PG DATA bringing Postgres people to UIC in June 2027 and DevOpsDays Chicago at the UIC Forum that August.

Because ChiPy moves between host offices, a year of its nights is a tour of which Chicago companies run Python in production and how their teams are laid out. Digital Delivery Chicago is the rarer room, with QA engineers and product owners next to the developers, and the release arguments it has are the ones a commissioned platform will meet in its first month live.

FAQ

Software development in Chicago: common questions

Do you work with Chicago companies?

Yes, and with companies across the United States. Arizona does not observe daylight saving, so we are one hour behind you from November to March and two hours behind from March to November. A morning standup on your clock is still early afternoon on ours.

Do you have an office in Chicago?

The office is in Gilbert, Arizona, with teams in Amsterdam, Dnipro and Hyderabad. Delivery is remote or hybrid, and we travel for discovery, workshops and the opening weeks of a build.

Can the event log serve as our reconciliation source?

That is what it is for. The event log is authoritative and read models derive from it, so a projection can be rebuilt by replay rather than reconciled by hand. In a business where reconciliation is a daily function that is the difference between an hour and a week.

What kinds of custom software do you build?

Web applications, mobile applications, APIs and the data platforms underneath them. The work we do best is the sort that has to be governed and auditable, where a wrong write is expensive and somebody has to be able to explain afterwards what changed and why.

Do you take over an existing codebase?

Often, yes. A good part of the work arrives as something already built that has become hard to change. We would rather read it and tell you honestly whether it is worth keeping than sell you a rewrite you may not need.
