Databricks consulting for Houston companies

Instrumented data at volume breaks a warehouse's cost model long before it breaks its schema. Streaming through Lakeflow into Delta, with cost policies set at build time and a Genie layer that cites the reading it drew from, survives both the bill and the regulator. Ship Channel refiners and Texas Medical Center research are Houston's loudest cases, and a port operator or a distributor with sensors on its fleet has the same curve.

Founded

2017, and still independent

Bench

115+ engineers, 80 Databricks-certified

Experience

Fifteen years average, per engineer

Serving

Houston, Sugar Land, The Woodlands, Pasadena

Energy and petrochemicals on one side, the Texas Medical Center on the other, and a long tail of companies serving both. If you run one of them, you generate instrumented data at a volume where an AI answer without its source is unusable, and a regulator will eventually ask how a number was reached.

What databricks consulting covers

Migration off Snowflake, Synapse and Teradata

Run through TechFabric Airlift, with executable playbooks for twenty-seven source platforms, signed migration certificates, and a cutover you can reverse at two in the morning.

Unity Catalog governance

Catalogue and schema design, a grant model expressed through groups, row filters and column masks, and lineage that survives a refactor. The boundary your agents and Power BI inherit.

Lakeflow pipelines

Ingestion and Lakeflow jobs with schema evolution handled rather than hoped for, medallion boundaries drawn on purpose, and jobs that recover instead of restarting from zero.

Databricks Apps and agents

Applications that run inside the workspace under their own service principal, and agents on Unity Gateway that inherit catalogue permissions instead of routing around them.

Genie and AI/BI

Metric definitions agreed with the person who owns the number, and a benchmark suite Genie has to keep passing, so the answer holds up when finance checks it.

Cost that somebody can defend

Cluster policies, warehouse sizing, file layout and the queries that actually pay. Instrumented at build time rather than discovered on an invoice.

Two regulators can share one platform

Two of Houston's large producers of data answer to different rulebooks. A pipeline operator on the Ship Channel keeps integrity records that PHMSA audits under 49 CFR Parts 192 and 195. A sponsor running trials in the Texas Medical Center keeps electronic records under the FDA's 21 CFR Part 11, with HIPAA over the patient data, and the service firms working for both hold records under each.

The usual answer is a platform per regulator, and we'd argue against it every time. Two stacks double the audit surface, drift apart, and leave a reconciliation report between them that becomes the first thing an inspector asks about. We'd rather run one runtime and evaluate policy per action, so a Part 11 signature and a pipeline inspection record are different checkpoints on the same system.

The first two weeks produce a table before they produce code. Every action that touches regulated data gets a row naming the rule that governs it and whether it needs a recorded signature, a person's approval or only a log entry. The pipeline is built against that table, which means the audit trail exists from the first run instead of being reconstructed for the first audit.

Clients we have done this for

Sensor histories and clinical records come from systems that never shared a key, and the pipeline built for Athlinks deals with that shape, stitching more than 400 million athlete records from disparate sources. It runs on Temporal with automated retries and real-time visibility, so a failed step reruns and the run stays observable.

Health & Wellness

AthlinksAthlinks

Athlinks had more than 400 million athlete records from sources that never agreed on who an athlete was, and a matching run that died halfway through couldn't just start again. Our engineers took the project from prototype to production as a serverless pipeline on AWS with Temporal holding the state. Failed steps now retry on their own, failures reach Slack as they happen, and the matching rules are tuned for each tier.

How an engagement runs

  1. 01

    Two weeks, fixed fee

A Databricks Health Check reads the workspace and returns a scorecard: compute cost, job reliability and Unity Catalog gaps, with what to fix first. You keep the document either way.

  2. 02

    Scope you can defend

For a migration, the two-week Migration Readiness Sprint inventories the estate, agrees exclusions and hands you a wave plan before anyone picks a date.

  3. 03

    Build in your workspace

The work runs in your workspace and your repository, with your engineers in it from the first week, so the pattern is one they can extend.

  4. 04

    Hand over with the reasoning

A written record of what was decided and why, which the next platform lead almost never gets.

Two weeks, fixed fee, and a written plan whether or not you build it with us.

Tell an engineer what you want to build

A senior engineer reads it and replies within one business day, usually with the questions that decide the first two weeks.

A sentence or two is plenty, such as what it should do and what stands in the way today.

Goes straight to a senior engineer. By sending this you agree we can contact you about your enquiry, and occasionally about our work. Tell us to stop at any time and we will.

Around Houston

Houston's data calendar, from Westchase to Main Street

The Houston Databricks User Group meets on occasional weekday evenings, often at Improving in Westchase, and opened 2026 with the Houston Python Enthusiasts on Python in Databricks notebooks. Day of Data and AI, a volunteer-run conference, follows on 4 and 5 December. In February 2027 Rice's Ken Kennedy Institute holds the 20th Energy HPC & AI Conference at the BioScience Research Collaborative in the Texas Medical Center.

That conference began as the Rice Oil & Gas HPC Conference, and the people it draws from operators and national labs have run seismic and reservoir jobs on clusters for decades. If a Houston migration plan touches those jobs, their talks will help you sort which belong on Spark and which should stay on the cluster they run on now. We set the cost limits before the first stream runs.

FAQ

Databricks consulting in Houston: common questions

Do you work with Houston companies?

Yes, and with companies across the United States. Arizona does not observe daylight saving, so we are one hour behind you from November to March and two hours behind from March to November. A morning standup on your clock is still early afternoon on ours.

Do you have an office in Houston?

The office is in Gilbert, Arizona, with teams in Amsterdam, Dnipro and Hyderabad. Delivery is remote or hybrid, and we travel for discovery, workshops and the opening weeks of a build.

We have both energy operations and clinical research. One platform?

Yes, and without a fork. Policy is evaluated per action rather than per application, so two regimes with different rules run on the same runtime with different checkpoints enforced. Maintaining two platforms to satisfy two regulators is the expensive way to solve this.

What makes you an award-winning Databricks engineering team?

In September 2026 Prove It, an app built by TechFabric engineer Ivan Vydrin, was named a winner in the Creativity & Originality track of the Databricks Community Genie-Powered App Challenge, placing second worldwide in a contest Databricks ran and judged. The announcement is on community.databricks.com and the code is public.

What level of Databricks partner are you?

TechFabric is a Databricks partner. We don't publish a tier, because tiers measure commercial relationship as much as engineering depth, and we would rather be judged on the bench and the work. Eighty of our engineers are certified, we run our own business on the stack, and the four accelerators we bring are open source.
