# Databricks consulting in Washington, DC

> The federal government and the contractors, associations and law firms arranged around it, a cybersecurity concentration in Northern Virginia, and a biotech corridor up the Maryland side answering to the same agencies. If your work touches any of that, the assessor will ask for the authorisation boundary and the decision trail, and the system has to be built with the answer.

## Why Washington work is our work

When an assessor asks where a figure in an agency-facing report came from and who could read it, the answer is scattered across SQL Server, Oracle and whatever was added later. Unity Catalog gives NIST 800-53 and FedRAMP-aligned controls one place to point at for lineage, grants and audit, and we migrate in stages so reporting keeps running. Around DC that's Dulles corridor contractors, downtown trade associations and biotech firms in Montgomery County.

## Work a buyer here would recognise

The SmartCert study is for anyone whose assessor or members ask where a document went and who handled it on the way. Its system replaced emailed attachments with a traceable exchange of certificates and quality documents between manufacturers, distributors and their customers.

## The authorisation boundary decides the architecture

In DC, nothing reaches an agency's users without an authority to operate. FedRAMP, run by GSA from 1800 F Street, NIST SP 800-53 and, for defence contractors along the Dulles corridor, CMMC all ask the same three things. Where is the boundary, what crosses it, and who approved the crossing? A contractor in Reston or Tysons can't deliver until an assessor has those answers in writing.

## Questions

### Which Databricks meetups do engineers in Washington, DC go to?

The Databricks User Group Washington DC, whose meetups run under the Databricks DMV name, plans to meet every quarter around the Washington metro. Past sessions include a talk on cross-agency collaboration for fraud prevention and a Databricks DevConnect evening.

We organise the Gilbert Databricks User Group, which meets at our office in Gilbert, Arizona. The DMV group is the one for your engineers to join at home, and if a trip to Arizona ever lines up with a Gilbert session, they'd be welcome there too.

### Can Databricks enforce Washington, DC's data classification levels for a vendor?

Yes. The District's data policy, Mayor's Order 2017-115, sorts enterprise datasets into levels from 0, Open, through 4, Restricted Confidential, and asks agencies to keep an inventory of them.

We'd put that level into Unity Catalog as a tag on every table and column, then write grants and masks against the tag, so a Level 3 field is masked for anyone without the right role in every table that carries the tag. A copy doesn't inherit the tag, so we'd tag tables when they're created and run a scheduled lineage check for untagged tables built from Level 3 data. The inventory becomes a query over the catalog.

### Can Databricks help our Bethesda lab, near Washington, DC, meet NIH's sharing policy?

Yes. NIH's Data Management and Sharing Policy, in effect since January 25, 2023, applies to all NIH-funded research that generates scientific data, and it asks for a plan at application and for that plan to be followed.

We'd set up the workspace so the plan can be checked. Raw data and the shared release each get their own catalog, every release is a versioned table with lineage back to the instrument files, and the metadata a repository wants is generated from the catalog so nobody types it by hand.

### Can you build inside a FedRAMP or CMMC environment?

We build inside authorised boundaries and design so the evidence an assessor wants is produced by the platform: least privilege, an event trail on every change, grants that resolve at read time. The authorisation itself is yours and your assessor's, and we do not claim it on your behalf. What we do is make the package easy to assemble.

## What databricks consulting covers

### Migration off Snowflake, Synapse and Teradata

Run through TechFabric Airlift, with executable playbooks for twenty-seven source platforms, signed migration certificates, and a cutover you can reverse at two in the morning.

### Unity Catalog governance

Catalogue and schema design, a grant model expressed through groups, row filters and column masks, and lineage that survives a refactor. The boundary your agents and Power BI inherit.

### Lakeflow pipelines

Ingestion and Lakeflow jobs with schema evolution handled rather than hoped for, medallion boundaries drawn on purpose, and jobs that recover instead of restarting from zero.

### Databricks Apps and agents

Applications that run inside the workspace under their own service principal, and agents on Unity Gateway that inherit catalogue permissions instead of routing around them.

### Genie and AI/BI

Metric definitions agreed with the person who owns the number, and a benchmark suite Genie has to keep passing, so the answer holds up when finance checks it.

### Cost that somebody can defend

Cluster policies, warehouse sizing, file layout and the queries that actually pay. Instrumented at build time rather than discovered on an invoice.

## Working with us from Arizona

Arizona does not observe daylight saving, so we are two hours behind you from November to March and three hours behind from March to November. That leaves most of your afternoon overlapping our morning, which is usually enough.

Most delivery is remote or hybrid. We travel for discovery, workshops and the opening weeks of a build.
