# Databricks consulting in Raleigh, NC

> Pharmaceutical and biotech manufacturing around the research park, enterprise software in Cary and Durham, three research universities feeding both, and a clinical research industry between them. If you're in life sciences here, you buy AI under validation, and the system has to be one whose behaviour can be shown.

## Why Raleigh work is our work

LIMS, MES and CRO systems that never agreed leave the data team tracing results by hand while auditors keep asking about governance. We migrate them onto a Databricks lakehouse where Unity Catalog lineage and the audit system tables answer an inspection's questions directly. Research Triangle Park's drug makers are the strictest case, and a utility or a university lab has the same disagreement between systems.

## Work a buyer here would recognise

An attachment in an inbox can't show where it came from, which matters the moment an inspector asks for a document's history. SmartCert moved certificates and quality documents out of email into a traceable system shared by manufacturers, distributors and their customers.

## Validation is a property of the system

Around Raleigh and Research Triangle Park, software sits inside regulated work, from batch records at the biologics plants in Holly Springs and Clayton to trial data at contract research organisations such as IQVIA in Durham. 21 CFR Part 11 asks for secure, time-stamped audit trails on those electronic records and signatures linked to the records they sign, and GxP wants any computerised system that touches them shown to work as intended before it's used.

## Questions

### Do Raleigh's Databricks engineers get together anywhere?

They do. Databricks for Agentic AI @Raleigh holds a Databricks & Coffee session on a Saturday morning each month at BoxYard RTP in Research Triangle Park. It's informal, and it's where Triangle engineers who already run Databricks compare notes.

Our own Databricks user group meets at our office in Gilbert, Arizona. Delivery is remote or hybrid, and we travel for discovery and the opening weeks of a build.

### How would Databricks handle our Raleigh company's data sharing with state agencies?

Through Delta Sharing, with a record of what was sent. North Carolina's Enterprise Data Office at NCDIT supports the CJLEADS criminal justice system and an automated fraud and compliance alert tool, and both depend on joining data from different agencies. We'd expect a vendor feeding work like that to be asked where every field came from.

We'd keep your outbound tables in Unity Catalog with lineage on each one, and share them to the recipient. Each delivery writes a manifest of the table version and row IDs shared, and the audit system tables show when the recipient's credentials were issued, so 'what did the state receive, and when' is a query your team can run.

### Should a Raleigh company hire data engineers before or after the Databricks migration?

Before, if you can. NC State's Institute for Advanced Analytics has run its Master of Science in Analytics since 2007, with a practicum on real sponsor data, so Raleigh has graduates who can model a business problem.

Someone who sits through the migration knows why each table and grant was set up the way it was, and that's hard to pass on in a handover document. We'd pair that person with our engineers from the first sprint, write the runbooks with them, and hand over after they've run an on-call week without calling us.

### Can your pipelines and AI systems be validated under GxP?

That is how we build them. The audit trail is produced by the platform rather than reconstructed, the pipeline replays to an exact result, and every change to a model or a prompt carries the evaluation that scored it. Your quality team owns validation and we produce the evidence in the form they need.

## What databricks consulting covers

### Migration off Snowflake, Synapse and Teradata

Run through TechFabric Airlift, with executable playbooks for twenty-seven source platforms, signed migration certificates, and a cutover you can reverse at two in the morning.

### Unity Catalog governance

Catalogue and schema design, a grant model expressed through groups, row filters and column masks, and lineage that survives a refactor. The boundary your agents and Power BI inherit.

### Lakeflow pipelines

Ingestion and Lakeflow jobs with schema evolution handled rather than hoped for, medallion boundaries drawn on purpose, and jobs that recover instead of restarting from zero.

### Databricks Apps and agents

Applications that run inside the workspace under their own service principal, and agents on Unity Gateway that inherit catalogue permissions instead of routing around them.

### Genie and AI/BI

Metric definitions agreed with the person who owns the number, and a benchmark suite Genie has to keep passing, so the answer holds up when finance checks it.

### Cost that somebody can defend

Cluster policies, warehouse sizing, file layout and the queries that actually pay. Instrumented at build time rather than discovered on an invoice.

## Working with us from Arizona

Arizona does not observe daylight saving, so we are two hours behind you from November to March and three hours behind from March to November. That leaves most of your afternoon overlapping our morning, which is usually enough.

Most delivery is remote or hybrid. We travel for discovery, workshops and the opening weeks of a build.
