# Databricks consulting in Portland, OR

> Athletic and outdoor apparel headquartered on the west side, semiconductor manufacturing in Hillsboro, and consumer brands selling worldwide from one metro. If you're one of them, AI in your catalogue, supply chain or customer conversation touches data about a person, and the system has to know whose.

## Why Portland work is our work

SAP, vendor planning tools and a Snowflake or Redshift layer bought for reporting leave merchandising, planning and finance with three sets of numbers and a migration nobody finishes. We move them onto a Databricks lakehouse governed by Unity Catalog, inventoried before a date is picked. Portland's apparel and footwear brands are the large-scale case, and a credit union or a regional distributor has the same three sets.

## Work a buyer here would recognise

Built to cut operating expense and reliance on manual work, Funko's warehouse management system doubled operational efficiency. It's the study for a consumer brand whose orders move from factory to carrier to warehouse and need to get through the same building without adding hands.

## Oregon's privacy law asks who you shared it with

The Oregon Consumer Privacy Act took effect on 1 July 2024, and one right in it goes further than most state laws. A consumer can ask for the names of the specific third parties their data went to. In Portland that lands on the athletic and outdoor brands around Beaverton, which also answer to California's law and, for fitness or health data on shoppers across the river in Vancouver, Washington's My Health My Data Act.

## Questions

### Could our Portland engineers join a Databricks user group before we start?

Yes. The Portland Data + AI Meetup is the Databricks user group for the Portland metro, and its page lists in-person sessions in February, May and October, on topics from data engineering and governance to generative AI.

We organise the Gilbert Databricks User Group, which meets at our office in Gilbert, Arizona. For your project we'd fly into PDX for discovery and the opening weeks, then work remotely.

### Can Databricks make sense of a Portland manufacturer's energy and meter data?

Yes, and we'd start by putting the utility's readings beside your machine data. PGE says it powers two-thirds of Oregon's commercial and industrial activity, so a Portland plant is likely to have the utility's interval data in one place and its own machine sensors in another.

We'd land both in Delta tables, and a pipeline lines them up by machine and by fifteen-minute interval to show the cost per unit produced for each line. We'd expect that to point at a shift or a piece of equipment burning power while idle, which is a cheap fix once someone can see it.

### Can Databricks give our Portland-area plants one view of production?

It can, and the work is mostly agreeing what the numbers mean. Manufacturing accounts for 111,900 jobs in the Portland metro, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics (September 2026, preliminary), and we'd expect a company that grew by buying plants to have a different MES at each one.

We'd bring each plant's data into Delta tables as it is, then define yield, scrap and downtime once in Unity Catalog so every plant reports against the same definition. Plants join one at a time, and the old reports keep running until the new ones match.

### Can you build a consumer platform that satisfies state privacy laws?

Yes, by making the data model answer the questions the laws ask: what we hold about a person, where it came from, who has read it, and how it is deleted. Access resolves at read time through the catalogue, the event trail shows every use, and a deletion request is a workflow that finishes. Your counsel defines the obligation and we build the system that meets it.

## What databricks consulting covers

### Migration off Snowflake, Synapse and Teradata

Run through TechFabric Airlift, with executable playbooks for twenty-seven source platforms, signed migration certificates, and a cutover you can reverse at two in the morning.

### Unity Catalog governance

Catalogue and schema design, a grant model expressed through groups, row filters and column masks, and lineage that survives a refactor. The boundary your agents and Power BI inherit.

### Lakeflow pipelines

Ingestion and Lakeflow jobs with schema evolution handled rather than hoped for, medallion boundaries drawn on purpose, and jobs that recover instead of restarting from zero.

### Databricks Apps and agents

Applications that run inside the workspace under their own service principal, and agents on Unity Gateway that inherit catalogue permissions instead of routing around them.

### Genie and AI/BI

Metric definitions agreed with the person who owns the number, and a benchmark suite Genie has to keep passing, so the answer holds up when finance checks it.

### Cost that somebody can defend

Cluster policies, warehouse sizing, file layout and the queries that actually pay. Instrumented at build time rather than discovered on an invoice.

## Working with us from Arizona

Arizona does not observe daylight saving, so from March to November we are on the same clock as you and from November to March we are an hour ahead. Either way the working day overlaps almost completely.

Most delivery is remote or hybrid. We travel for discovery, workshops and the opening weeks of a build.
