# Databricks consulting in Philadelphia, PA

> Health systems and universities first, pharmaceutical manufacturing across the New Jersey and Delaware border, and an insurance sector older than either. If you're in one of them, a wrong answer from a model is a patient or a claim, and the system has to be built knowing that.

## Why Philadelphia work is our work

Auditors want minimum-necessary access proven on every table, and a migration that can't show it stalls. We move your warehouse onto Databricks with row filters and column masks in Unity Catalog, so a Power BI report or an agent inherits the analyst's grant. HIPAA makes that the rule for Philadelphia's health systems, from Penn Medicine to Jefferson, and an insurer or a drugmaker across the river wants the same.

## Work a buyer here would recognise

Patient indexes and claims files are built from records stitched together across sources, and Athlinks needed a pipeline to do that for more than 400 million athlete records. The study shows the multi-tiered serverless architecture built on Temporal for it, with granular control, automated retries and real-time visibility across the whole run.

## Minimum necessary belongs in the platform

Philadelphia runs on health care. Penn Medicine, Jefferson and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia are among the region's largest employers, and Independence Blue Cross pays claims from Market Street. HIPAA's minimum-necessary standard covers all of them, so a report, a service account or an agent that reads more patient data than its task needs is a use the rule doesn't permit, whatever the intent behind it.

## Questions

### Who runs Databricks meetups around Philadelphia, and how often?

PhillyBricks, the Philadelphia Databricks User Group, meets every few months on weekday evenings, in Northern Liberties or out in Paoli. Its October session had a Databricks engineer on building digital twins for manufacturing.

We organise the Gilbert Databricks User Group, which meets at our office in Gilbert, Arizona. If your team goes to PhillyBricks and wants to compare notes with the engineers who'd work on your platform, we'll set up the call.

### How would a Philadelphia hospital or university put its research data on Databricks?

One protocol at a time, since that's how research data is approved. Education and health services employed 769,700 people in the Philadelphia metro in September 2026 (preliminary), roughly a quarter of all jobs there, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

We'd make the protocol the unit of access. Each approved study gets its own Unity Catalog schema, and the IRB's approval becomes a grant that a scheduled job revokes when the approval lapses. De-identified views are built once and shared, so a postdoc's notebook can't wander into the identified tables.

### Can Databricks handle PJM grid data for an energy company near Philadelphia?

Yes. PJM, the grid operator based in Audubon outside Philadelphia, keeps the lights on for more than 67 million people across 13 states and the District of Columbia.

A utility, generator or large power buyer pulls prices and settlement data from PJM and has to match them against its own meters. We'd land each PJM feed as it's published and keep every revision, and a pipeline joins it to meter data, so a settlement dispute can show what the number was on the day you were billed.

### How do you enforce minimum necessary access under HIPAA?

An agent or a service reads through the same grants a person would, resolved at read time. There is no service account with broad access sitting behind the application, because that is the shape that turns an inefficiency into a breach.

## What databricks consulting covers

### Migration off Snowflake, Synapse and Teradata

Run through TechFabric Airlift, with executable playbooks for twenty-seven source platforms, signed migration certificates, and a cutover you can reverse at two in the morning.

### Unity Catalog governance

Catalogue and schema design, a grant model expressed through groups, row filters and column masks, and lineage that survives a refactor. The boundary your agents and Power BI inherit.

### Lakeflow pipelines

Ingestion and Lakeflow jobs with schema evolution handled rather than hoped for, medallion boundaries drawn on purpose, and jobs that recover instead of restarting from zero.

### Databricks Apps and agents

Applications that run inside the workspace under their own service principal, and agents on Unity Gateway that inherit catalogue permissions instead of routing around them.

### Genie and AI/BI

Metric definitions agreed with the person who owns the number, and a benchmark suite Genie has to keep passing, so the answer holds up when finance checks it.

### Cost that somebody can defend

Cluster policies, warehouse sizing, file layout and the queries that actually pay. Instrumented at build time rather than discovered on an invoice.

## Working with us from Arizona

Arizona does not observe daylight saving, so we are two hours behind you from November to March and three hours behind from March to November. That leaves most of your afternoon overlapping our morning, which is usually enough.

Most delivery is remote or hybrid. We travel for discovery, workshops and the opening weeks of a build.
