# Databricks consulting in Houston, TX

> Energy and petrochemicals on one side, the Texas Medical Center on the other, and a long tail of companies serving both. If you run one of them, you generate instrumented data at a volume where an AI answer without its source is unusable, and a regulator will eventually ask how a number was reached.

## Why Houston work is our work

Instrumented data at volume breaks a warehouse's cost model long before it breaks its schema. Streaming through Lakeflow into Delta, with cost policies set at build time and a Genie layer that cites the reading it drew from, survives both the bill and the regulator. Ship Channel refiners and Texas Medical Center research are Houston's loudest cases, and a port operator or a distributor with sensors on its fleet has the same curve.

## Work a buyer here would recognise

Sensor histories and clinical records come from systems that never shared a key, and the pipeline built for Athlinks deals with that shape, stitching more than 400 million athlete records from disparate sources. It runs on Temporal with automated retries and real-time visibility, so a failed step reruns and the run stays observable.

## Two regulators can share one platform

Two of Houston's large producers of data answer to different rulebooks. A pipeline operator on the Ship Channel keeps integrity records that PHMSA audits under 49 CFR Parts 192 and 195. A sponsor running trials in the Texas Medical Center keeps electronic records under the FDA's 21 CFR Part 11, with HIPAA over the patient data, and the service firms working for both hold records under each.

## Questions

### Who meets in Houston to talk about running Databricks?

The Houston Databricks User Group opened with a session on Python in Databricks notebooks, run with the Houston Python Enthusiasts at Improving on Richmond Avenue. We don't run it, but it's a good room to hear how other Houston teams use the platform.

Our own group is the Gilbert Databricks User Group, which meets at our office in Gilbert, Arizona. For your project we'd fly in for discovery and the first weeks of the build and run the rest remotely.

### Can Databricks keep up with Port Houston's growing container data?

It can, if the cost is designed in early. Port Houston handled 4,303,345 TEUs in 2025, a record and 4% up on 2024, and the event data behind a yard, a trucking fleet or a customs broker grows with the boxes.

We'd stream gate and booking events into Delta tables through Lakeflow and keep the raw feed so any report can be rebuilt from it. Cost limits go on the jobs before the volume arrives, which is cheaper than finding them on the bill.

### Could our Houston hires run the Databricks platform after you leave?

That's what the last weeks of the build are for. Rice University runs its Master of Data Science on campus in Houston, and we'd expect graduates of a programme like that to know notebooks and Python. They won't know why your pipelines are shaped the way they are.

So we'd write that down as we go and keep jobs, grants and dashboards in code with Databricks Asset Bundles. Your first data hire pairs with our engineers on real tickets before we step back, and the handover happens on work they'll own.

### We have both energy operations and clinical research. One platform?

Yes, and without a fork. Policy is evaluated per action rather than per application, so two regimes with different rules run on the same runtime with different checkpoints enforced. Maintaining two platforms to satisfy two regulators is the expensive way to solve this.

## What databricks consulting covers

### Migration off Snowflake, Synapse and Teradata

Run through TechFabric Airlift, with executable playbooks for twenty-seven source platforms, signed migration certificates, and a cutover you can reverse at two in the morning.

### Unity Catalog governance

Catalogue and schema design, a grant model expressed through groups, row filters and column masks, and lineage that survives a refactor. The boundary your agents and Power BI inherit.

### Lakeflow pipelines

Ingestion and Lakeflow jobs with schema evolution handled rather than hoped for, medallion boundaries drawn on purpose, and jobs that recover instead of restarting from zero.

### Databricks Apps and agents

Applications that run inside the workspace under their own service principal, and agents on Unity Gateway that inherit catalogue permissions instead of routing around them.

### Genie and AI/BI

Metric definitions agreed with the person who owns the number, and a benchmark suite Genie has to keep passing, so the answer holds up when finance checks it.

### Cost that somebody can defend

Cluster policies, warehouse sizing, file layout and the queries that actually pay. Instrumented at build time rather than discovered on an invoice.

## Working with us from Arizona

Arizona does not observe daylight saving, so we are one hour behind you from November to March and two hours behind from March to November. A morning standup on your clock is still early afternoon on ours.

Most delivery is remote or hybrid. We travel for discovery, workshops and the opening weeks of a build.
